I Musici de Montréal
Arts in Education
I Musici de Montréal offers a variety of Arts-in-Education services while on
tour, including the opportunity for young musicians to join them in performance.
Music and Magic - The Wizard’s Book of Spells (Offered in French, English or
Spanish):
Featuring a magician and story-teller along with the orchestra, this youth &
family show is based on 19th century French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin
(in honor of whom Houdini took his name). The story-teller proposes a challenge
to confirm the identity of the mysterious magician, who has apparently arrived
in on-stage via time travel. The orchestra performs musical excerpts that
illuminate the story, and some children from the audience are invited on-stage
to participate in the action. The Wizard’s Book of Spells includes excerpts of
Beethoven, Britten, Gould, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Nikos, Pergolesi, Rossini,
Shchedrin, Skalkottas, Stravinsky, Vivaldi and more.
Pictures at an Exhibition - An introduction to the fabulous world of
Modest Mussorgsky's beloved piece "Pictures at an Exhibition" through the eyes
of painter Natasha Turovsky and filmmaker Gael Hollard. This innovative program
includes the orchestra's new transcription of Mussorgsky's exciting and dramatic
work performed in front their award-winning film. The acclaimed new
interpretations are accompanied by breathtaking imagery projected on a large
screen on-stage. "a truly artistic meeting of art forms that reached from the
humor of dancing eggs with protruding legs and beaks to ominous images in
catacombs." (The Birmingham News/al.com)
The Toy Symphony: A family concert project (or school outreach concert) wherein students
musicians from the
community join the professionals in
rehearsal and performance. The performers and the management work closely with
the community beforehand, choosing students aged 7 to 12 (variable) to practice
ahead of time with a designated teacher/leader on the toy instruments with
scores provided by I Musici de Montréal. The instruments are: (all toys)
trumpet, drum, duck cuckoo, ratchet, nightingale, triangle. Day of concert
rehearsal is coordinated with instruments provided by the professionals. The
concert program includes one piece with the students: Leopold Mozart's Toy
Symphony.
The Toy Symphony Pre-Concert Workshop: I Musici de Montréal member
Francoise Morin (American, bi-lingual) visits a school setting to give
a lecture/demonstration about the upcoming Toy Symphony concert. Recommended for groups of 30-40 students.
Francoise brings the instruments, demonstrates each one, has the children
try out the toy instruments that will be used in the performances, and does
listening exercises with them. Especially targeted to students who have had
little or no exposure to music class. (Note, this workshop is also available in Spanish.)
The Tchaikovsky Children's Album: Recommended for ages 7 - 12, this workshop
is lead by conductor Yuli Turovsky, who uses the evocative
power of the work to get the students actively involved in the music. Turovsky
asks the students questions and leads them through this irresistable score.
Option: A good young flutist in the community join the chamber orchestra for one
particular movement in the score.

La Musique, Ca bourge! (Music is Motion!)
This interactive concert created by I Musici de Montréal and choreographer Jean
Leger creates a ballet. With Jean Leger as choreographer, ringleader and master
of ceremonies, members of the audience (youngsters, parents, friends)
participate in on-the-spot choreography in interaction with the musicians of I Musici de Montréal. The full length program is 90 minutes long, and there are
shorter versions available. After the choreography is prepared on the stage, a
skit is performed in which all have participated. La Musique, Ca bourge comes
