Alchemy for
Three
“Alchemy for Three” is a program featuring music that shows the
three instrumentalists of Chatham Baroque in different roles: as soloists,
accompanists, and equal partners in duos and trios. The program includes
gems by well-known baroque masters such as J.S. Bach, Arcangelo Corelli,
and Marin Marais, but with works by Castaldi, Stradella and Heudelinne, it
also ventures into wonderful terrain unknown to many music enthusiasts.
Performers: Andrew Fouts (baroque violin), Patricia Halverson
(viola da gamba), and Scott Pauley (theorbo and baroque guitar)
Bohemian
Rhapsody
An eclectic program of Central European musical selections from
Poland, Czech Republic, and Austria, featuring the rousing "Trumpeter or
Krakow,"
performed by one of
North America's premier performers on the natural trumpet.
Combine additional works by Heinrich Biber, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and
Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky, and this performance of seventeenth-century music
for trumpet, strings, and continuo will take your breath away.
Performers: Andrew Fouts (baroque violin and viola), Patricia
Halverson (viola da gamba), Scott Pauley (theorbo) and special guests
Barry Bauguess (baroque trumpet), Julie Andrijeski (baroque violin and
viola), and Webb Wiggins (chamber organ)
“Performing works from 17th-Century Central
Europe in
Pennsylvania's second oldest Polish Church brought an aura of authenticity
to the ensemble's polished performance. . . . Playing on a copy of a 1720
instrument, Bauguess combined the right notes with soft articulations,
athletic lip trills and virtuosic registral shifts throughout the
concert.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
La Dolce Vita: At the Crossroads of Italian Classical and Folk Traditions
From the popular sounds of the “Tarantella di San Michele” and “Tammurriata,”
to the compositions of Castello, Uccellini and Corelli, Italian
Baroque meets Italian folk music for the best of both worlds! This program
traces (in part) the sweet life of the violin in
Italy, from
a lowly tavern instrument to the bella figura it has become.
Chatham Baroque is joined by fiery Italian-American violinist, Daniela
Pierson, who is not only a superp baroque player, but also a passionate
performer of Southern Italian Folk music, dance, and percussion.
Performers: Andrew Fouts (baroque violin), Patricia Halverson
(viola da gamba, recorders), and Scott Pauley (theorbo and baroque guitar)
and special guest Daniela Pierson (baroque violin, percussion, and dancer)
“Glorious details of the works emerged, and when the playing was
passionate, the music's vibrations were visceral. . . . Pierson performed
several folk tunes by memory and with flair. That Chatham Baroque can play
art and folk music with equal aplomb is quite impressive.” (Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette)
Españoleta
Explore diverse music from Baroque Spain and Latin America with its mix of
rhythm and spice. Bright, joyful dances such as the Tarantelas, Canarios,
and Folias come alive in this unique program. Guest percussionist Danny
Mallon, joins Chatham Baroque in a toe-tapping performance of audience
favorites.
"This is well-performed, enjoyable music in a one-hundred percent Latin
American version." (Goldberg Magazine)
Danzas y Bailes:
Ask about this special version of Españoleta with two baroque dancers in
full costume. This program was performed to great acclaim at the 2006
Madison Early Music Festival and will be repeated in 2008 in Calgary,
Canada, and at The Newberry Library, Chicago.
La cetra amorosa - Songs and Sonatas of baroque
Italy
From the ground-breaking works of
Monteverdi to the high baroque style of Vivaldi La cetra amorosa
offers a sampling of Italy’s finest gems. Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux
joins Chatham Baroque in love songs, lullabies, and villanellas paired
with sultry instrumental sonatas and lively dances.
"And there is
simply no better baroque soprano…with a voice of pure silver, she sang her
music radiantly, turning high notes into bursts of pure light." (The
Washington
Post)
Prothimia
Suavissima
Like buried treasure, the mysteries of Prothimia suavissima have been
waiting for centuries to be unearthed. Chatham Baroque performs selected
sonatas from this unique 24-sonata collection, newly reconstructed by
violinist Julie Andrijeski. Roughly translated as ‘the desire for the
choicest sonatas,’ this 1672 collection Prothimia suavissima sive
sonatarum selectissimarum, includes sonatas from the best composers of the
time, including Bertali and Schmelzer and some mysterious Unknowns. They
highlight great 17th century composition techniques including the stylus
phantasticus, and are performed with five guest instrumentalists: baroque
violin, dulcian, trombone, chamber organ and violone, for a company of
eight on stage. (*This program has just been released on the Sono Luminus
label. The CD is titled "Sweet Desire".)
